Rick Waghorn

Rick Waghorn returned to his family's Norfolk roots when he joined the Evening News in 1992 as initially a sports reporter. Rick became the paper's Norwich City football writer at the start of the 1993-1994 season - just in time to follow the Canaries on their epic UEFA Cup adventure. After 13 seasons following City for the Evening News, Rick and Archant Newspapers went their seperate ways in 2005 as cyberspace called. The fruit of which you reading right now. A second 'Canary Greats' book is due out later this year.

Why the reaction to the use of the 'A' word? Cos it threatens the rock upon which City is built.

Given the volume of small, Norfolk businesses whose livelihood is in some way, shape or form entwined to the continuing fortunes of their local football club, taking them to the cleaners to the tune of two pence in the pound whilst the players’ wages are ring-fenced by Football League law would destroy any sense of Norwich City being a ‘community’ club.

I don't know. And I suspect very few people do, either. Is Lambert a serial jumper?

Lambert doesn’t need to work for money. He doesn’t need to work, full-stop. The cash from his playing days is banked; that’s sorted. What is more important is the timing, the opportunity and the potential. Is the time right – already – for him to throw himself into the deep end of Premiership football management...

A complete hostage to tonight's fortune, but things are going well, aren't they?

Belief, confidence… call it what you will. But it’s there. And in certain aspects, once its there it develops a life of its own – so, for example, new arrivals are welcomed into the fold with a genuine warmth and regard; that are not seen as a threat; a desperate last throw of the dice… they are seen in a positive light, not a negative one.

A view from afar; what's changed of late and what shows little sign of changing at all...

Therein, of course, lies one little bitter pill that might have to be swallowed should substantial inward investment not be forthcoming; that all Norwich and Lambert might be doing is fattening up a Korey Smith for a future sale; like it or not, that might be part of David McNally’s medium-term thinking… that City have to cash in on their home-grown talent far more than they have in the past.

If ever there was a story with 'legs' this might be the one. It has possibilities...

It’s a few more miles up the A11 than Gold might like, but the finances are likely to be more transparent; he’ll have no legacy of Premiership player wages to deal with; he can start with a clean slate wages-wise; set his level from Day One, as opposed to trying to knock people down from Day One.

Hopefully, that's that on the listless kids front. Teacher is now back in charge...

What will be interesting to see is whether Culverhouse plays the Steve Walford in the set-up; bearing the brunt of the coaching duties with O'Neill-Lambert adding the stare, the comment, the tweak... O'Neill also had John Robertson to act as his eyes and ears; to be more than the court jester, but to float about the place and add something else to the chemistry.

Football is a simple game; ask Shankly. A simple game of pairs, basically...

A sitter and a runner. Together they get angles; Adeyemi is getting beyond the Glovers’ back four; that’s where Grant Holt’s third and final goal came from; the 17-year-old bursting into the box; creating new angles compared to the flat-line that a Tudur Jones and a Gill might offer.

The response has to be swift; has to be sure. Otherwise another boiling cauldron awaits...

The biggest is the fact that City's last 7-1 caning came away from home. You can get away with 7-1 canings away from home. Or at least you can if it happens once every 17 years. Because 24,000 Norwich fans do not travel away; nor did events at Ewood Park play out in front of 18,900 season ticket holders...

'What's yer luck like, Bryan?' is the big question. Right now, I'd say: 'Pretty good, actually...

But if I am Bryan Gunn and I see the way that that kid has come on leaps and bounds over the course of the summer break - added inches of muscle to that upper torso and all with his natural eye-for-goal still intact - I'd be offering a silent prayer of thanks. The chances are that the Tom Adeyemis of this world don't come around that often; not in this neck of the woods...

Big looks all set to be the new small this summer. And therein lies City's hope...

For some, of course, there is this sense that Norwich are moving away from their 'traditions'; that, by obvious implication, if you slam a six-foot four-inch forward of a Liam Dickinson ilk at the tip of your team, so the ball will follow - it'll be slammed high, long and direct towards Dickinson's head with little or no thought for the demands of the paying punter.
