Rick Waghorn

Rick Waghorn returned to his family's Norfolk roots when he joined the Evening News in 1992 as a sports reporter. Rick became the paper's Norwich City football writer at the start of the 1993-94 season... just in time to follow the Canaries on their epic UEFA Cup adventure. After 13 seasons following City for the Evening News, Rick left Archant in 2005 to set up myfootballwriter.com.

City striker Morison picks the perfect moment to make a big point – in every sense of the term

May 6th, 2012 by Rick Waghorn | 2 Comments »

“We’ll see how many people ring up today on Canary Call and say that I am the worst player ever to wear a Norwich City shirt,” he told BBC Radio Norfolk afterwards. “So, yes – it’s fantastic. It shuts a few people up and we now go into the last game of the season and see how we get on there.”

Morison denies Arsenal at the death as Canaries deliver a total, final away-day treat for the travelling Yellow and Green Army

“I thought the performance at Spurs the other week was as good as it has got in my time, but that might just surpass it. Everything was stacked against us; the team that we were up against; [the fact that] they’re vying for Champions League football. But I thought we were well worthy of something.”

Lambert salutes a ‘brilliant’ job done as he warns City fans not to expect a wild time at the summer sales…

May 4th, 2012 by Rick Waghorn | No Comments »

“I’ve always said that about footballers – once you become ‘domesticated’, if you like, then you lose that hunger. And I don’t want players who are in a comfort zone – the club was littered with them when I came three years ago.”

City pair Lambert and Holt don’t end the weekend wholly empty-handed… both are among the ‘Ollies’ as Holloway dishes out his awards

May 1st, 2012 by Rick Waghorn | Comments Off

There has been a debate about whether he merits a call-up to the England squad. I think that would probably be taking it too far, though he hasn’t a chance anyway; the bottom line is that if you don’t play for one of the big clubs in this country, you don’t get selected by England…

Chelsea play their part to perfection and deliver the Canaries the certainty they have long yearned for. Job done.

“You have to try and keep learning – keep trying to improve,” said Lambert afterwards. “To try and do the best that they can. And they are young enough to do that.”

“They were three great finishes, but…” was the gist. “You can’t give someone of that calibre the time and the chances that we did. He can hurt you.”

Anfield legend Molby salutes City’s progress under Lambert this season and demands big performances off the Reds

April 27th, 2012 by Rick Waghorn | Comments Off

“They are a high-energy team who can pass the ball and score goals,” said Molby. “They may be 13th, but they are only three points behind Liverpool. Paul Lambert deserves immense credit. They will be a tough test.”

Second guessing Lambert’s transfer moves is more like fourth guessing a tight-lipped City. But, in the spirit of idle gossip…

So in the spirit of idle speculation and – given that Carrow Road is stitched up as tight as the proverbial gnat’s a*se these days wink and a nudge-wise – it will never be anything more than that, two teams crossed my thoughts last weekend…

Bolton’s win might deny Lambert the maths he has been seeking, but it is Villa with the alarms bells ringing

April 24th, 2012 by Rick Waghorn | 3 Comments »

“We’ve only got ourselves to blame for not putting the result beyond Bolton,” he told SkySports. “But it’s still in our hands – we have nine points to play for and we’ve simply got to try and get ourselves out of this situation that we’re in at the moment.”
