Ooooh, old Ferret doesn't half love a good transfer tale. And this one's a cracker…
Only trouble is that your man knows even less Greek than he does Spanish, so the thoughts and intentions of our new little friend Stephen 'Sunny' Sunday end up going through a Google translator.
So whether or not the 19-year-old Valencia midfielder is about to join AEK Athens on a six-month loan deal is something of a mystery tonight.
I don't think he is. First the Greek version of events; and quotes that appeared in a Greek newspaper overnight. Who the author is, is something Ferret never quite worked out. But no matter.
“The Greek team originally sought half opsion borrowing in the market. But Valencia did not discuss the possibility of opsion on any team if Sani go. So this is finally the AHA accepted the six-month lending without opsion. The Valencia reckons the player, who has another five years contract. It believes, however, that it is preferable to go to a team that will play more to be left without games,” said the lad's agent, manager or whoever…
“He also proposals from France and the second category of Spain, but dismissed. Currently the proposal being considered more seriously than any other is that of the team. I think this is something positive will be closed until Wednesday. The Sani wants what every player wants – have opportunities in the struggle.
“The Greek league is one of the good European championships, the AHA is one of the three top teams, possesses Spaniard coach and this will help the Sani adaptation. The Sani evaluate the case and team as a positive and useful experience.”
OK, 'Sani' is clearly Sunny; 'AHA' is AEK. The kid has been told by Valencia boss Ronald Koeman that he's unlikey to get a game for the next six months; he's better off finding a club elsewhere. He also signed a six-year deal.
AEK wanted an 'opcion' to purchase at the end of those six months; Valencia said 'No…' AEK said: 'OK…'
He wants to play games – or rather 'have opportunities in the struggle'. AEK have got a Spanish coach; he will help him adapt. The AEK move is the one that he is thinking about the most, but there are others.
'Sani evaluate the case' means Sunny is thinking about it. Or at least that's the line that's being spun at the Greek end.
Find yourself a little paragraph from the Spanish sportspaper Marca tonight, pop it through a translation text box and you get this: “Sunny does not want to be gone to Greece on the other hand, Sunny does not want to go from the Valencia in spite of Saws Ferrer, technician of the AEK of Athens has asked him to reinforce the team to the month of June.”
Which to old Ferret's eyes, looks like a 'Nah…' But then he's not going to get a game at Valencia; particularly not now Koeman has splased out ?900,000 on Hedwiges Maduro from Ajax. And Koeman has already told the kid that.
But turn to Goal.com, and they appear even more certain that Sunny won't be lighting up the Greek capital anytime soon.
'Sunny has turned down the opportunity to join AEK Athens on loan until the end of the season as he wants to stay and fight for his place in Koeman's side,' Goal.com reported today.
So, for old Ferret's money, that's one out of the running…
