A result that our Glenn needed like a hole in the head. Too ‘significant’ by half.

It was the 'significant' result that Glenn clearly didn't want.

Because if Rosenborg's attitude towards City's continuing chase of their star striker Steffen Iversen was 'resolute' going into tonight's UFA Cup second round, second leg tie with Swedish neighbours Djurgaardens, it'll be a damn sight more resolute now after his lordship bagged a hat-trick this evening in their 5-0 romp through to the third round.

The 32-year-old kicked the night off with a trademark, thumping header in the 43rd minute to level the tie at 2-2 on aggregate, before smashing home two second-half penalties in the 67th and 86th minutes to complete Rosenborg's 6-2 win on aggregate.

The fact that that took his tally – to old Ferret's rough calculations – to 11 from 16 appearances this season merely confirmed again that the lad is bang in form; the fact that he slotted twice from the penalty spot will only further frustrate the gaffer given our Jamie's inabililty to convert from 12-yards out at the Ninian.

Having already become the first Norwegian side to lift the old InterToto Cup this summer, the wind is definitely in Rosenborg's sails.

And as much as the Mrs might fancy the switch home to England before the long winter comes, the fact that Iversen is a home-town boy and his old man is a Rosenborg legend is merely going to hinder City's cause again.

There'll be a big 'I can't leave my people now… ' routine going on inside the player's head.

What's also interesting tonight is the fact that Palace – likewise linked to Iversen – appeared to have given up the chase and have plumped instead for Alan Lee out of Town. He's down at the Selhurst tonight sorting out his personal terms and completing a medical; the two clubs having agreed a fee this morning.

All of which then leaves Jim with a big situation vacant at the front of his team. Which, presumeably, he still hopes can be filled by our old pal Shola.

Hamstrings permitting.

Mind you, 'failing a medical' is one of those that can be used to cover a multitude of 'I don't like the wages you're offering…' sins.

Either way, everything's brewing up nicely ahead of Monday night's extended transfer deadline.

And Iversen looks as far away from turning up in Norfolk as he's ever done.

Surprised Giannoulis keeps his place but I think Wagner must have seen something in training. Come on you yellows! #ncfc

Can’t argue with that. Strong starting team with many options from the bench. #ncfc
