MFW regulars [we love you all] may recall that our previous Manchester United preview featured my Norwich neighbour, the admirable Sean Tilsley – who happens to be married to Debbie who is a rabid Citeh fan.
But there’s been plenty of water under the bridge since then so it was obviously time for a catch-up to discuss matters red and yellow.
Straight to the point Sean – what was it like for you at home the day you won at Citeh?
For me it was fantastic – of course, it was. Debbie wasn’t best pleased and remarks were made about “bl0ody Salford United” so I retired to the boudoir a little later than usual if you get my meaning.
We have to play our youngsters basically but not entirely because of financial restrictions but Ole Gunnar Solskjaer seems to do the same despite your wealth. You know, James, Greenwood, McTominay – even Marcus Rashford isn’t exactly an OAP?
It’s right in my eyes. Some make it and some don’t but giving the youngsters a chance can save a few bob. Some Reds like this approach and some don’t. I do. And I’ll take you to task on one point. We are not as rich as we are perceived to be. The Glazers take a lot out of the Club and I’ve no love for them whatsoever.
Swerving our views about our respective owners [we’d be here all night] how’s the “baby faced assassin”doing in your view?
Well, it’s so up and down, topsy-turvy. I’d love to know how he speaks with the squad and how he makes his decisions. I think he’s okay in the medium term and we must surely give him some more time.
Has VAR gone down well with you?
It’s $h*t. Scrap it now.
Don’t hold back mate. Say what you think. You’ve got a couple of important Cup games coming up around the time of our meeting. Do you reckon Ole will be resting a few folks when you play us?
We have a few significant injuries and Solskjaer might not be able to rest too many. Norwich have done us in the past and might well do it again but it would be a disaster for United if we lost.
So how far away is your current squad from the Man U of old that we all grudgingly respect?
First off I think of the 1990s quote from Alan Hansen: you can’t win anything with kids. Scholes, Beckham, Nicky Butt, the Nevilles. But you simply cannot compare our current squad with them. Going forward I just try and be positive and hope for the best.
So what do you think of our survival chances?
There’s always hope and always a chance. You play good stuff but whether you make it or not is up to you really. And VAR. And refs.
In predictable MFW fashion I’m going to ask you for a score guess [hold on to your seats City fans, Sean’s prediction wasn’t what I was expecting].
This one I find incredibly hard to judge. There could well be a turning point for Norwich so I’m going 2-1 for Norwich City.
Following the Carabao Cup semi-final on Tuesday night I suspect the atmosphere in the Tilsley household might have become a little bit on the frosty side again. Thank the Lord Mrs P supports City – at least football doesn’t cause rifts between us although our adult children, the allocation of duties for walking the dogs and who is paying for what at the supermarket often do!
Thanks to Sean for his time and trouble – although we love a good yack about football any day of the week!
