If you wanted our season summed up in two hours, Saturday delivered. Big time.
We played our hearts out, took Man U to the brink of a penalty shoot-out but got kicked in the guts three minutes from the end. And had Timm Klose sent off for a professional that I wouldn’t actually argue with as he “took one for the team” by wrestling Odion Ighalo to the floor when he would otherwise have been clean through.
To add insult to injury Lukas Rupp and Todd Cantwell were both subbed with what Daniel Farke described as a precautionary and an abductor issue. You couldn’t make it up, could you?
But the fire had returned and we really did look the part. It’s not enough to spark a Premier League status-remaining miracle but I would imagine there are a few Championship managers already thinking: “I don’t want to face them next season”.
Of course, it will all depend upon who we retain, who we sell and just how good are the latest crop of recruits to the under-23s. But after that performance, I’m not too despondent for our future as long as we retain the services of Messrs Webber and Farke. And surely after watching that match a few “Farke Out” idiots on social media will have the common decency to keep their gobs shut.
Gary G dissected the BBC perfectly yesterday and so leaves me with little to add on that topic except this: In their eyes we are and we will always be l’il ole Norwich. To be humoured, not to be taken seriously and condescendingly applauded after every relegation.
I make no bones about it. I despise the other relevant Gary [Lineker] for a variety of reasons, not all of which relate directly to football.
12 months away from listening to him pontificating about us will bring me great pleasure. Unlike our Gary G, I can cope with Shearer and Jenas – and indeed Danny Murphy – but not Krispy Lugs. He just irks me, Mrs P and just about everybody we know, whichever team they happen to support.
Am I jealous of his declared £1.75m annual salary? Actually, no. My only point of envy is that he speaks better Spanish than me. He lived there longer than I did so that’s my excuse.
Oh well, that turned out to be a bit more about the BBC than I intended but what the heck.
So it’s once more into the breach dear friends, this time against the misfiring Gunners at the Emirates on Wednesday. We must be collectively shattered both physically and mentally so I’m getting my [justifiable] excuses in for us early.
I don’t think we’ll get much from that one.
We should take great pride in that wonderful strike from Todd Cantwell and the performance of the entire squad on Saturday. Mates messages included: “Proud of my team”, “Proud to be Yellow” and “Proud of the lads”. Notice the common theme?
I’m afraid we will be in the Championship next season, whichever form that might take, but Saturday’s match allowed us to leave the toxic PL on a richly deserved high.
I absolutely loved watching Brentford against WBA at the weekend. They are really good, are the Bees, but they won’t make it to said PL. But we’ll be better and can take them.
Sorry y’all – it’s how we must look forward right now.
In every sense [both footy and non-footy] I’ll leave you with this.
Tom Robinson Band – Long Hot Summer
LHS was TSC, Martin?? !! I’m with you on Lineker, my growing-up; City’s finest. Don’t like his politics, dumping of wives, all round slimeyness.
Hi Dan
Sometimes things are better left unsaid but since you mentioned it yours are exactly the reasons I have little regard for Lineker.
A visit to his brother’s bar in Magaluf [I know – we went in for a dare] told me all I needed to know 15 years ago.
I would class myself as centre left but oh well, you can guess what I think of a certain type of faux socialist.
And that’s the end of my take on the Andrew Marr show 🙂
Cheers.
I went into the Lineker bar in Blackpool it was known for many things but got closed for sell mon prescription stuff lol
Oh surely I didn’t hint at that Alex, did I?
You couldn’t get that kind of stuff on the original Leicester fruit and veg stall [which I’ve never visited] – or could you?
Funnily enough apart from the odd bit of weed before, at and after a gig I’ve never done anything druggy in my life. Probably the same as most of our generation!
Never had the inclination but life in the RAF, working offshore and test in all the industries I have worked really made it a no no
Hi Martin. For an article where you mentioned Gary had covered the BBC issue well yesterday, you also couldn’t ignore them! Rightly so. It’s (possibly) interesting that Big Lugs has said in the past his mother comes from Norwich – she obviously didn’t bring him up proper!
I thought that performance was a real confidence booster for us supporters, at least, no matter what league we find ourselves in next season. To take the game to Man Utd after going a goal down showed what we can do. They are one of the form teams in the Premier League at present, and to hold them for so long with 10 men really showed our spirit. Shame we couldn’t have held that three minutes longer, so we could see if Tim Krul could demonstrate the power of his water bottle again!
You never know, Chelsea, Man City and Arsenal might just be distracted enough by Wembley appearances to give us an edge in those games. Not to mention that the experience so far in this league and the Bundesliga is that away teams are winning more often might also be a factor, and those three games are all away for us.
Hi Jim
I’m not a conspiracy theorist and don’t particularly believe in kismet but the stars have not aligned for us this season and I doubt they will now.
It’s a shame because on our day we can produce some wonderful stuff and Saturday was indeed encouraging in many ways.
When you look at the semi finalists and the fact that you I and thousands of us wouldn’t be allowed anywhere Wembley I’ll echo Archant’s Dave Freezer by saying it’s not that much of a miss.
Thanks as always.
Marty, the previous two games had me fearful for next season in the Chump but the Man U game has restored my faith. We know there will be changes but overall the squad looks sound and we have a clutch of youngsters with promise. Add the fact that Danny hasn’t lost his way and we have have a good scouting network, might see us back to winning ways.
Hiya Cutty
There’s nothing like having a bit of faith restored. It’s a bit like sanding down an old table you were going to tip [or in my case carve up and sling on the woodburner] but then realise how good it looks with a new coat of stain and lacquer.
These have been crazy times for players and supporters alike, but we’ve yet to launch a firework at City Hall. Whether that’s good or bad I’ll leave for you to decide!
Thanks
The truth is we are just not good enough. When at first a global pandemic cannot save you, and then you are hoping that global warming will come to your rescue, you know that you are in deep trouble. What next asteroid strike to bring the season to abrupt end? That is a mark of how desperate things are. Rather than relying on acts of God I would prefer Farke to pick our best eleven to start which he hasn’t done for the last three months. If he did that we would have a chance.
Hi Tony
I absolutely see where you’re coming from and choosing our best XI would be something to ponder for all of us.
Right now [not at the start of this godforsaken season and bearing in mind who is actually currently available] mine would be: Krul, Aarons, Godfrey, Tettey, Lewis, McLean, Rupp, Cantwell, Buendia, Hernandez and Idah.
Pukki is a spent force I’m afraid.
I bet most MFW readers would come up with a different XI!
Thank you.
PS the season is not over – any team in the bottom 5 that goes on a run will save themselves – though there has been no sign that will be us, Villa, West Ham, Bournemouth, or Watford yet.
As I said the other day: us, Bournemouth and Villa will drop.
Watford will get away with it by the skin of their covidiot fore$kin, as will West Ham.
I charge for tarot readings 🙂
I think it is wide open for one team to pull it out of the bag. The bottom clubs have been very poor and even four wins and a draw might be enough. Though that may as well be a Mars mission the way we have been playing. As for best team Farke’s selections and formations have been very odd in the last few games and to persist with Rupp , Drmic and Duda whilst benching Pukki, Buendia and Cantwell has felt very strange. 4-4-2 was a disaster and I think faith could have been gainfully employed – changing has actually just unnerved everyone.and definitely not improved our points tally – we have actually got worse.
A great read on a chilly Monday morning Martin. Mind you, I’m quite happy with a few days of cooler weather, as I found the heat and humidity unbearable at times last week.
Where oh where was that level of performance/desire/passion etc in the previous 2 games. IMO, had we done that, then we would have had a minimum of 1 point against Everton.
ManUre with all their wealth/players costing and being paid megabucks struggled against an excellent NCFC side. I’m certain that had we had a crowd there, we would be off to Wembley in a few weeks’ time
I usually check to see the ‘player ratings’; by one of the Archant triumvirate on the day following the game and the difference between those on Thursday and yesterday was unbelievable.
Unfortunately for us and for Pukki, it’s just not happening for him of late and others have failed to ‘step up to the plate’ and plunder a few goals. TC showed that it is possible to score from outside the 18 yard area, but how often are our players’ almost trying to ‘walk the ball into goa?’
Time to give him a rest and give Idah a run??
Looking on the bright side, I see Villa lost again and I’d love to see WetSham join us in the championship next year.
As you rightly point out, a great deal of how we fare next season will massively depend on how many of our ‘youff’ opt to avail themselves of DF and his coaches’ tutelage in the championship, or opt to leave and test their talent against PL/European teams. Like ALL NCFC fans, we’re hoping for the best and as long as we lose no more than 3 or 4, I think we should be OK, as SW has already added to the squad

Hi Ed
Chris P said the other day words to the effect of: “how do you MFW guys keep coming up with something original?” I laughed it off at the time but he was spot on. It’s difficult tbh.
As for the Archant lads I’ve never met Paddy D but I can assure you that Dave Freezer and Connor S [once of this parish] know their stuff. Both are supporters, which helps!
Pukki seems finished I’m so sad to say.
However I reckon we’ll be okay in the Championship if we can only somehow keep Hanley and Zimbo fit. We need two more CBs as Godfrey will doubtless be off and Timm Klose doesn’t really have the legs left in him unfortunately.
I do NOT want to see Alex Tettey playing out his final season for us as an emergency CB – he’s worth so much more than that. To both himself and the team.
And on a selfish note I do wonder if I will ever return to Carrow Road – I’d be pi$$ed off if I didn’t but it’s out of my hands basically.
Thanks as ever.
Good stuff Mr P.
I cannot disagree with anything said about Big Lugs and his employers.
But can someone please explain why we have to be referred to as Li’l Ole Norwich when for much of this century we’ve been in the PL? They don’t talk about Li’l Ole Leeds/Sheff Weds/Sheff Utd/Derby etc; etc…..why us??
Anyway, a great performance on Saturday, which as your mates have confirmed made us proud. Why we couldn’t have done that against Everton I don’t know, as possibly just 3 more points could have made the end to this season that much more interesting. Having said that, it does appear that none of the bottom 5 are capable of stringing any sort of run together.
We need Pukki tobe firing, but at the moment the barn door and banjo saying comes to mind!
Plus of course under Mr Farke we have run Chelsea, and Arsenal mighty close in cup competitions, and beaten Man Citeh…
We can always dream, but as we all know, it’s the bl00dy hope that kills you.
O T B C
Hi John.
Of course it’s the hope that kills you but we don’t really have too much of that right now.
I’m not entirely certain of this but from the folks I know Lineker seems to get on everybody’s t*t$ and for a variety of reasons. Smarminess, politics or just a dirty great big head?
I read Gary’s take on this early yesterday and thought to myself don’t go there. Five paragraphs later I realised I had to have my say too. I am utterly delighted that everybody has agreed with the MFW take on this topic as yesterday’s comments and some of todays confirm.
The world would be a better place without him.
Cheers.
Good points, well made by all. Li,e you Martin, I shall refrain from commenting on the BBC save to say that I fervently hope the government takes a look at the licence fee and sorts the whole nest of vipers out soon. Lineker included.
There are ways to lose football matches, this method is acutely preferable to the melds deployed against Southampton and Everton. Effort and professional pride are non negotiable as far as I’m concerned and each player showed plenty of both.
Rupp, who is nowhere near as bad as some are saying, was industrious if unspectacular, the positional changes to cantwell and Buendia showed the pair in a much better light, the back four were mostly solid, tettey is a rock. In fact only Teemu looked out of sorts.
He cut a sorry figure, frustrated, bruised and battered, lacking in confidence. In the immediate term, this is bad news, as our goals have all but dried up. Looking at it with October in mind however, puts a more encouraging slant on things. Interest is likely to be low and with a little tlc and some rest and recovery, I suspect the little man could quite easily get his groove back. Form is, as they say, temporary.
While I agree that Big Timm probably had to go after being spun by igalo s
clever use of his ass and a grapple hold, I will admit to calling Jon moss something less than savoury. Particularly as he had ignored the antics of the odious mctimonay throughout the piece. There’s a bloke who needs a thump.
With three minutes on the clock, I was pacing the living room I front of my new telly heading every ball and roaring on the team. The two saves from Krul were out of this world, the crazy Dutchman clearly had Manchester in his sights and was warming up for the shoot out, the fact that the commentators had alluded to his prowess serve to hiGhlight the mental advantage we had heading toward the shoot out. I am sure we would have won.
Injuries and fatigue may well cook our goose now. I hope not.
Hi Chris.
Yeah we gave it a right good old go but I would guess the powers that be were quite happy that we eventually came up short.
What Gary said yesterday is spot on: we are NOT wanted.
As for Pukki I feel the ship has sailed. A player who thrives on supply and confidence is just that. No mate, that’s his lot. Just my opinion but his body language has become consistently and repeatedly awful. Will he get his groove back? I reckon no I’m afraid.
McTominay will get that thump sometime soon. Some have tried to do it to Tetts over the years but he is made of much sterner stuff and has never, ever, been a nasty ba$tard like McTominay.
Such a shame Tim K didn’t get his theatrical moment – my money would have been on him.
Good comment.
Having watched it again, how the heck did McTominay get away with so much?
His blatant take out of Cantwell (which admittedly the ref could not see) was surely worth of intervention from the lairds of Stockley Park.
Not that we’ll be bothered with him next season but Jon Moss refereeing NCFC brings almost as much disgust as one Simon Hooper…..or is it just me??
O T B C
It’s not just you John – I don’t much like Jon Moss either.
But to me Hooper remains peerless – he has owned The Referee’s Song ever since ruling out CJ’s overheard kick against Palace.
He never fails to disappoint when he turns up here 🙁
I’ve watched quite a lot of Championship games before and after the shutdown. I firmly believe that we are much better (even on our many off days) than any of the teams coming up or staying down. I also believe that any of the teams likely to come down with us will have to have fire sales which will decimate their squads far beyond what we’ll have to do.
I don’t particularly share the dislike of Line-Acre (as a Milk Cup winning hero used to pronounce). Sure he’s not particularly well informed, but chairpersons rarely are (anyone seen Fiona Bruce on QT?) and he is a sarcastic so and so. But I often find him amusing when he takes the mick out of other teams, so I’m not too bothered when it’s our turn. He’s not a patch on Colin Murray though.
I bought a load of paving slabs for the garden yesterday. As I was unloading them, each one of them looked increasingly like Harry Maguire. God, I hate those bloody slabs.
Ha!
Seems like a lot of us appreciate Colin Murray – I do too.
Fiona Bruce? She’s kind of endearing to those who appreciate that faux snobby attitude she possesses and I can just about put up with her on Antiques Roadshow. At a push.
I expected a TRB comment – oh well we can’t have it all 🙂
I meant to say, always liked Tom Robinson. Lots of great protest songs, 2-4-6-8 Motorway, Glad To Be Gay etc, but none so fine as Days (That Changed The World). War Baby was OK but probably financed a comfortable life for him.
Hi Martin
Well what a difference a game makes to the doubters.
Transfers for next season
1 Could it be possible that Ayala could come back a friend in Middlesbrough has suggested he will not play for them again and his dream move to Leeds will not happen.
2 Whatmore young lad at Sunderland had a terrible couple of seasons but showed loans of potential now on a free transfer so could it be buy one get one free.
The Lineker Bar in Blackpool on central prom was a magnet for footballers in its day so you got all the hangers on hoping to see a pair of big ears trot the light fan dango, but Mr Clean would step inside with all the trouble it had and if memory serves me didn’t his brother do time.
His oldest son was in the Dubai airport with a few friends and I was there catching my flight to Kurdistan and he tried to use his dads name to chat up an air hostess her reply was simple who is he and what does he do, it seems a few footballers offspring think they can live of their family past.
Arsenal on Wednesday I am hoping that we win this just to see how the teams around us start to react to the pressure Farke major miracle would be a great end to the season and just rub up a few people the wrong way.
Onwards and upwards
OTBC
Keep safe and well and best regards from a horrible wet and very wind Blackpool
Blimey mate the way we’re going the Linekers will instigate litigation – even though they wouldn’t stand a chance if they did cos the best defence against libel/slander is truth!
For what it’s worth our ex-player Billy Steele ran the Vine in Dove Street, Arsenal’s John Radford had the Greyhound in Thaxted Essex and Bobby Moore [yes that Bobby Moore] owned the Three Horseshoes in Spelbrook plus was part of a consortium that owned the Epping Forest Country Club alongside Sean Connery and Jimmy Greaves.
Alan Brazil had the Blackadder in Ipswich, just off the Buttermarket.
I never met Connery or Greaves but the other four were perfect gents. Including Brazil.
As for “chatting up” cabin crew I have a 100% rating but only cos she spoke to me first!
Thanks.
I met the stars of the Persuaders in a pub at the backend of RAF Stanmore Park calied the 7 balls Roger Moore and Tony Curtis is was after a days shooting for the program and convinced them to cone to the camp.
The news soon spread and the Station CO tyrned up and whisked them off to the Officer Club/Mess.
On a flight to Dubia I sat next to the Owner of Doncaster Rovers and it was interesting on his thoughts on the state of football this would be about 2010 and he was of full admiration for our owners at the time
Ha!
The best reception I ever got anywhere as a cub reporter with the Harlow Gazette was at Bassingbourne Barracks in the Sergeants’ Mess.
0800 and a pint or two of what you wanted plus a truly amazing spread. My “minder” was I think a major and he said the sergeants was the only place to eat.
If you can remember a meal from 40 years ago it must have been quite something – and it was!
And as for Roger Moore, how did he get away with that surname 🙂
Being one opposed to the re-start but shamefully watching too much fan less footy I had almost convinced myself that my life long love of the game had finally ebbed away and that at 65 the time had come to ‘walk away’ and lessen the stress.
Then ‘bloody’ Todd Cantwell scored a beaut and with heart racing I leapt to my feet whilst emitting a verbal explosion of noise and in that moment I realised I’m f****d, there’s just no escape whilst I’m still breathing and blessed with sufficient brain function.
Thank you Todd, Tim K, Ben, Alex, Onel, Jamal, Max, …………..(the order is important), for all the individual and collective effort. I’d also like to apologise to D F, okay I’m willing to admit you are a better manager than me, (but I would still have found a way of signing Jordan Rhoades).
I’m happy again, so it’s off to The Championship, then back to the Prem, I nearly got off the roller coaster, what a fool!
Hi Colin.
That comment will resonate with many of us so on this occasion all I will say is:
Thanks, nice one.
As usual MR P a decent Monday read, while reading and sipping me coffee my mind wandered (nothing new) I remember us sharing before this hodge podge of a season started. That we would not be surprised if our style of play caught a few teams out. Were we that naive to believe that ? Perhaps more in the excitement of gaining promotion & hope.
But it has gone mega T’s up more than I expected, bad transfer windows, with 2nd rate players
I look at Drmic he remind me of David Nielson, but without the goals, a headless type, then take Rupp, perhaps someone will. Money wasted on failed loans although I felt for Amadou, played in what was his 2nd position. But clearly not wanted by his club as shipped out on loan on returning from City.
Before a ball was kicked in anger it was clear to anyone with half a football brain we needed stentghening in defence. We leaked goals in the 2nd tier, a step would also be too far. Pukki was awesome last season, the step up cried for another striker, we got Drmic who had only scored 13 goals in 4 seasons. These speak volumes for me, they point to the failure we are seeing.
Still it doesn’t worry me too much, have been here too many times to get too upset, time to get the old Fulham away day tee shirt out again. Walking out of Craven Cottage that day feeling we had been conned by the club again (rumours supported that view) and again I feel the same again. This time my money has stayed in my bank.
Yep a few will go 3-4 of the lads. Pukki will be here sadly of late he has looked below his standard and that many clubs will hopefully cross him off their lists. A fair few of the transfers have been brought to the club for this reason, step up to the 1st team next season. Where as other relegations forward planning has been absent. If Farke and Webber decide that’s enough, that could be another matter all together.
Then it will be off we go again. on another roller coaster . with Delia rubbing her hands at Parachute money taking some of the worry away. I’ll take a rich consortium. to pump a little into the club and worry about the consquences when they happen, after suffering Delia.s yo yo style
Hi Lad
Yeah my old cranium has gone walkabout this season too – I’m pretty sure it’s not restricted to thee and me.
I remember Neilsen with all his fist-pumping and being the ladies’ favourite but he really achieved very little when we look back on it. Not one of our best recruits to my mind, without even getting into the territory of his betting misdemeanours after he’d left us.
As for Delia it’s simply a case of “whatever makes her happy” cos we can’t challenge her school of thought. We don’t support the Club as much as she does, of course we don’t. And her acolytes will never let us forget that.
Like I said the other day that issue has to remain on the back burner for now but it hasn’t gone away. Oh no.
Thanks.
Normally people work at the BBC at a discount, as in effect they would get more in the open market. However, I don’t believe any network would pay more, let alone what he already receives in salary. He is very much – still – the golden boy of the network.
I can’t remember the exact game, but we played Tottenham at their place in the Stringer era – when we were very good – and the unbookable Lineker forced the ball in with his hand. The cards stayed finally glued to the referees pocket and they always did where he was concerned. If I didn’t know better, it was as though he had pictures of the entire F.A in compromising positions.
Norwich do have a habit of playing into the media’s hands by spending nothing and getting nothing in return, with the usual ‘We told you so’s’ from Pundit Z.
I will intrigued to see where Cantwell goes next season, as a few others too. We will then see what the Premier League really thinks about Norwich City.
Hi IR
Funnily enough I remember that game myself – I was there too – and I’d guess at either 89 0r 90. As ever please tell me if I’m wrong, it might have been later.
My worst memory of Lineker as a player was at Carrow Road about 1990 when Paul Blades gave him a free header which allowed then to d*ck us 2-1. His celebration was to put his cupped hands behind his ears.
The thought of any extant illustration of members of the FA in compromising positions has a slightly nauseating effect on me tbh.
Finally I reckon Todd will be on his way to the Red half of Merseyside. We’ll see.
Great comment.
Hi Martin. Nice read again. As above one of out readers said, really took it to Man U so why can’t we do that to Everton, Southampton, Burnley etc. We perform against the quality”” but not teams we need to beat. Thought Godfrey, Tettey, Hernández and Krul were goodn but can’t see what positives Duda, McLean or even Emi bring to the team. Keep waiting, not happening. Keep well, mate.
Hi Kev.
I actually thought McLean was like the Curate’s egg. Good in parts.
He’ll be an important ingredient of next season as will Rupp, Vrancic and the Stieperdude.
Mr Argos will provide some pace as will young Adam Idah. Pukki’s finished. I dunno exactly why but finished he is.
Guess I’ll see you in season 2021-22 at this rate 🙂
Hi Martin, (!)
Think you’re being a bit harsh on Pukki. Yes, his confidence is shot but that can be got back again. Is he still bothered by the toe injury? That would be more concerning. I suspect he has still has one more good Championship season in him.
So, where next for NCFC?
Down the 2-4-6-8 Motorway to The Emirates on Wednesday. We’ll probably be Up Against The Wall for most of it but we’ll be Rising Free by the end of it and when we complete the little miracle, it’ll be Too Good To Be True. Couldn’t think of a line where I could use Glad To be Gay.
Hi DP3.
I hope you’re right about Pukki – I really do. None of us wants to see a Canary player struggling, especially as he’s been the best striker we’ve had in quite a while now. I base my view almost purely on body language so of course I might have got it wrong. Hope so!
TRB were great. Saw them once at the Marquee very early on – probably when 2-4-6-8 had just come out. The band were still wearing school ties back then as were over 75% of the audience. Me and my mates didn’t know the “dress code” so were tieless. A TRB gimmick of course – as were the badges.
Thanks.
whens the cricket start.?
When the umpire drops his left arm to an over-the-wicket right hand bowler.
Otherwise known as: I dunno.
Next week a test match
